El intento de establecer un nuevo récord sobre la Ruta del Descubrimiento de Colón retoma su curso.

El barco español zarpaba de La Gomera ayer martes a las 19:55:08 hora peninsular, momento en el que se ponía en marcha de nuevo el cronómetro de la Real Federación Española de Vela para el récord sobre la Ruta del Descubrimiento de Colón.

A primera hora de la mañana sonaba la señal de atención. El Desafío MAPFRE cambiada de amarillo a código verde. La salida de La Gomera era por tanto inminente. El VO70 "MAPFRE", cargado y revisado. La tripulación preparada. Sólo quedaba esperar el mejor momento para soltar amarras. El último en incorporarse, el vigués Pablo Iglesias, llegando a la isla canaria. A las 19 horas 55 minutos y 8 segundos (hora peninsular) de ayer martes el cronómetro de la Real Federación Española de Vela ha vuelto a ponerse en marcha. El intento de establecer un nuevo récord sobre la Ruta del Descubrimiento de Colón retoma así su curso.

¿10 días para cruzar el charco?

Tras cumplir su primer objetivo marcando un récord de sólo 43 horas y 20 minutos entre Palos de la Frontera y La Gomera, la tripulación del VO70 "MAPFRE" se enfrenta ahora al cruce del Atlántico de Este a Oeste. Son, si trazásemos una línea recta, casi 3.100 millas las que separan La Gomera de San Salvador, en las Bahamas, isla en la que desembarcaron Cristóbal Colón y sus hombres el 12 de octubre de 1492.

Con dos vueltas al mundo a sus espaldas, el cántabro Pablo Arrarte,"Patán", que sumará con éste su quinto cruce del Atlántico, comentaba ayer por la tarde que el parte meteorológico que maneja la tripulación del VO70 "MAPFRE" apuntaba que predominarán en esta travesía los vientos medios, en torno a los 25 nudos de velocidad, y de popa.

El hecho de que el viento sea de popa impedirá a la tripulación española marcar un rumbo directo hacia el punto al que tiene que llegar en San Salvador, por lo que el barco del Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo y del Monte Real Club de Yates de Bayona podría llegar a completar casi 4.000 millas.

"Seguiremos una ruta más al Sur de lo que barajamos en un principio, que nos permitirá ir rápido y seguros, evitando riesgos innecesarios", ha explicado Arrarte. "Si se cumplen las condiciones que esperamos podríamos completar el recorrido en unos diez días".

"Muchos de los que formamos esta tripulación ya hemos navegado en este mismo barco muchas millas y los que no lo han hecho son regatistas, aunque en otras clases, también muy experimentados. En el breve tiempo que hemos tenido para entrenar nos hemos acoplado bastante rápido, y esperamos que eso se refleje en esta Ruta del Descubrimiento", ha concluido el santanderino.
