34 America´s Cup.- Vuelco espectacular del ORACLE.

El ORACLE TEAM USA vuelca su AC72 en la bahía de San Francisco.

El ORACLE TEAM USA, defensor de la 34 America's Cup, ha volcado su catamarán gigante AC72 en la bahía de San Francisco durante una sesión de entrenamiento. La tripulación ha salido ilesa del incidente.

El vuelco tuvo lugar durante el octavo día de entrenamiento del equipo en el agua. Se estaba empezando a formar un enérgico oleaje contra una de las corrientes más fuertes del año. Al comenzar una empopada, la proa del barco se clavó en el agua y el barco se dio la vuelta.

"Cuando se clavó la proa, la vela rígida se metió en el agua y algunos tripulantes se cayeron al agua," dijo el táctico Tom Slingsby. "No estábamos seguros de si la vela rígida iba a rebotar y golpearnos, por lo que todos nos bajamos fuera del barco."

Épico rescate para salvar el catamarán

Con el barco sobre uno de los cascos, las olas no tardaron en dañar la vela rígida. La fuerte corriente llevó al catamarán mar a dentro y al caer la noche el equipo aún estaba trabajando en recuperar la plataforma del catamarán y traerla a la base. La vela rígida estaba completamente destrozada.

"No hay duda de que esto va a suponer un retraso. Esto es una prueba para el equipo," dijo el patrón Jimmy Spithill. "Pero este equipo vivió una situación similar en la pasada campaña antes de ganar la America's Cup. Un equipo fuerte se recupera de esta. Esto no va a evitar que ganemos la America's Cup."

Cada equipo que compite en la 34 America's Cup y la Louis Vuitton Cup (la America's Cup Challenger Series) puede construir dos barcos AC72. Este es el primero de los dos barcos que el ORACLE TEAM USA construye y bota. La botadura del segundo está prevista a principios del año que viene.

Representantes de la organización dijeron que el retraso del equipo estadounidense no afectará al calendario de regatas de 2013.

"Esto supone un reto para el ORACLE TEAM USA," dijo Stephen Barclay, el director general de la 34 America's Cup. "El equipo valorará cómo arreglar el daño causado por el vuelco y ajustará su programa como sea necesario. Esperamos que estén listos para defender la Copa tal y como está planeado."
