The insatiable Thomas Coville is sailing another record attempt across the Mediterranean Sea. The French watch captain won the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 with Groupama before going on to start the MOD70 European Tour… Yet still, he can't get enough.

"An ideal position". Interview with Jean Le Cam

Posted: 11 Sep 2012 01:56 AM PDT

You should all know that Jean Le Cam hasn't changed. As he approaches his third Vendée Globe, the sailor from La Forêt Fouesnant in France and a key member of the Absolute Dreamer racing team, is adding the final touches to Synerciel, the boat he'll be racing in a bid to make life difficult for the competition. His forthright spoken manner remains intact and his passion continues to burn strong...

Pierre-François Boneau spent a few hours at sea with Le Cam.

Good weather, nice seas... It's a summery French September day as Jean Le Cam's small team gets SynerCiel ready for a technical test sail. Today's schedule includes trying out some sails, taking a closer look at the ergonomics for certain manouevres and to continue to work on the list of odd jobs to be finished by October 19th, when the Vendée Globe boats must be race-ready at Les Sables d'Olonne. As the monohull makes its way across the Port-Louis estuary in Brittany, the crew are very busy indeed, with Jean heading backwards and forwards checking everything on deck. Everything is checked over with the utmost precision whilst Philippe Laot, the Technical Director of the project, takes note of his own and the skipper's observations. The interview takes place between sail runs and load tests for the hydrogenerators.

How are you approaching this third Vendée Globe?
"I'm relaxed. I'm with a healthy project. We don't have a huge budget, but we are working together as a small team, which is something that works well for me. I have a good boat that we've already done a lot of work on to make it more efficient".

Along what lines have you worked in terms of improvements to the boat?
"The boat is owned by the FNOB and it raced the last Barcelona World Race as Renault Z.E. We've reached a contractual agreement with our friends in Barcelona which includes the hire of the boat and the work to develop and optimise her for the next Barcelona World Race. That means that we are not only working with the Vendée Globe 2012 in mind but we're also thinking ahead to 2014. This approach has really been helped by the excellent relationship with the people at the FNOB. There's a sense of mutual trust which has allowed us to make some significant improvements to the boat in a fairly short space of time".

What were the main focus points for these modifications?
"I still have the same ideas. The lighter the boat, the more tolerant it is. We've changed the mast for one with a different profile, just as tough but a lot lighter. We've also been able to reduce ballast whilst maintaining stability. Overall we've also been able to lighten the load by 900kg. That's not far from 10% of the total weight of the boat, which isn't bad at all..."

Have you made any other considerable modifications?
"What we've done so far is enough. We've also made some other additional changes, but we've been very careful. This project has been put together in a very short time. With that in mind it's important to be realistic. What really matters is having a boat that is well-prepared for the starting line. It may not be the fastest in the fleet, but the Vendée Globe is a very long race. A lot can happen. In any case, I know I've get a 'healthy' and well-tested boat..."

You decided not to take part in the IMOCA training sessions at Port-la-Forêt...
"Because in my case it wouldn't have been any use. If you want to attend that sort of course then you need to go with the boat already rigged up to racing mode. We have a small team. The time taken to prepare for those sessions would have been time that we lost in preparing the boat for the starting line. Going to these things with a boat that is not at its full performance capacity is no use at all".

For this particular Vendée Globe you are taking part with a boat whose original design process you were not involved in. In fact, you have got involved with an exisiting framework. Is that a big change for you?
"Firstly, this isn't the first time... For the Barcelona World Race 2010 I hired Mike Golding's boat. That was a lot more complicated than it has been this time with the FNOB. After that we adapted. With more time there's no doubt that there would have been things I may have changed, mostly below deck where we could still lighten up. However, I have been able to put my stamp on it. Apart from that, there are no other significant changes. I have the administrative support of Absolute Dreamer and their infrastructure but preparing a boat is always a preparation process. What's different now is that I have a half an hour drive every day to get to Lorient".

Are you feeling very calm as you approach the start of another race?
"I'm in a comfortable position really, ideal. Everyone's watching the newest, latest generation boats and they're not paying much attention to us. For me that's just perfect... we can do what we need to do without the pressure. In the end a race is a race. The idea of lying in wait has always gone well for me".
